My neighbor insisted I needed fancy compost for my balcony tomatoes
Told me that regular potting mix would never work in containers. I went ahead and used basic soil from the hardware store anyway, and my cherry tomatoes are thriving after 8 weeks. Has anyone else found that specialized mixes are overhyped for small balcony setups?

Yep, that's total nonsense. I grew cherry tomatoes in cheap hardware store potting mix on my fire escape last year and they went crazy. The only thing I'd say is you gotta make sure it drains well, but basic mix with a handful of perlite mixed in does the job fine. Those fancy mixes are just a way to sell you expensive dirt.
