My tomatoes took a dive after one hot week in Phoenix

I left for work Monday and came back Friday to my cherry tomatoes on the 8th floor balcony looking like crispy bacon strips. The issue was the black nursery pots I had them in, they just cooked the roots in that 110 degree stretch. I wrapped all the pots in old cardboard and moved the whole setup behind the AC unit for afternoon shade, now they're bouncing back with new green shoots. Anyone else deal with heat stress on a south facing balcony, what did you use for shade?

Nursery pots are fine, heat builds character in tomatoes. You babied them too much.
