Picked clay pots over plastic grow bags, wow what a learning curve

I started my balcony garden back in March and had to choose between heavy clay pots and those cheap grow bags. I went with clay because they looked nicer on my tiny rental balcony in Austin. Turns out clay dries out way faster, so my basil was wilting by noon every single day. I had to water twice daily and still lost half my lettuce crop. Has anyone else regretted their container choice this bad, or found a good way to keep clay pots from drying out so quick?
