Root rot nearly killed my peppers, now I water from the bottom

Last June in Phoenix I thought my balcony peppers were done for. Leaves turned yellow and droopy, soil stayed wet for days even in 100 degree heat. Turns out my drain holes were too small and water pooled under the pots. I switched to self-watering bases with a wick system, now the roots stay dry on top and the plants drink what they need. Anyone else fight root rot on a hot balcony, or did you just switch to bigger pots?

Wait, the soil stayed wet for days in Phoenix in June? That’s wild, I can’t even wrap my head around that with 100 degree heat.
