The drainage holes I drilled were NOT enough and my basil drowned

I planted a new basil start last Saturday and used a cute ceramic pot I had. I only drilled three small holes because I was scared of cracking it. Two days of heavy rain later the soil was mushy and the roots were literally swimming. Now I have to repot everything into a plastic nursery pot and hide the ceramic one. Has anyone else had a pot disaster because you tried to be fancy?

Used to think a few holes were fine but watching that basil drown changed my mind completely.

Might be telling on myself but my succulents have seen more drowning incidents than a lifeguard training video. Guess we're all learning the hard way.
