Thought I could just use regular potting soil for my peppers

I spent 3 months wondering why my bell peppers were so small and sad. Turns out balcony plants need way better drainage than ground plants. Switched to a mix with perlite and vermiculite from Ace Hardware on 4th street and they started growing within a week. Anyone else make this mistake their first season?

yeah perlite is a game changer for container stuff but watch out with vermiculite, it actually holds too much water for peppers if you use too much. i learned that the hard way when my seedlings got damping off from being too wet. i do like a 60/30/10 mix of potting soil, perlite, and coarse sand now. works way better than anything with vermiculite.

Read in a gardening book that sand helps with drainage.
