Unpopular opinion: self-watering pots are overrated for small balconies

After 6 months in a 4x6 foot space in Seattle, I ditched all my self-watering containers for basic plastic pots with saucers and my tomatoes doubled their yield, so why is everyone here pushing these bulky system things when a simple daily check works better?
