Unpopular opinion: shade cloth is way more important than people think for balcony gardens

I lost two whole batches of lettuce last summer because I didn't realize my south-facing balcony was cooking them alive by noon, and it took me THREE MONTHS to figure out shade cloth was the fix. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of sun scorching problem?

Huh, I gotta disagree pretty hard here. I mean, I get that sun scorching is a thing, but I've had way more trouble with my balcony plants not getting enough sun because I was too quick to throw shade cloth over everything. Maybe it's just me, but most of the time the issue is leggy, weak growth from too much shade, not burned leaves. I'd argue that proper watering and plant selection matter way more than a piece of fabric, especially for things like lettuce that bolt anyway in summer heat.

Lettuce needs shade cloth, period.
