Wasted $30 on those self-watering pot inserts

Thought they'd save me time but all they did was make my basil roots rot. The water just sat there and never drained. Has anyone else had better luck with a different system?

Dude I had the exact same nightmare with those. I switched to those cheap terracotta spike things you screw onto a soda bottle. Works way better for my herbs. My basil actually survives now as long as I don't forget to refill the bottle every few days. The soil stays damp but not swampy like those inserts made it.

Did those terracotta spikes actually hold up or did they crack on you after a few months? I had the same luck with my basil after switching, but I went through like three bottles before I figured out the right height to hang them so they don't dump water everywhere.
