Temp probe died mid-brisket, had to trust the stall

My cheap probe crapped out at hour 9 of a 12 lb packer down in Tuscaloosa, so I just felt the bark and probed with a toothpick like my grandpa did. Pulled it at 203 internal on a backup instant read, rested 2 hours, and it sliced like butter. Anyone else ever lose their main probe and get stuck flying blind?

Flying blind is EXACTLY the worst feeling. I've been there with a dead probe on a pork butt, so I feel you. Good call on the toothpick trick, but next time try stabbing it near the flat, if it slides in like warm butter, you're golden even if the temp reads lower than you want.
