Fiction vs nonfiction pick for our club’s summer read
Our book club spent 45 minutes arguing about what to read for July. Half wanted a thriller, the other half wanted a history book. I pushed hard for the nonfiction pick, a book about the 1918 flu pandemic. We went with it and three people didn't finish it. Two others said it was too depressing for summer. Now I'm wondering if I should have just gone with the thriller. Has anyone else pushed a pick and regretted it when half the group checked out?

45 minutes of arguing about a book club pick... feels like the real issue might be that people just wanted an excuse to drink wine and talk instead of reading. The 1918 flu thing sounds rough for beach season too though.

An excuse to drink wine and talk instead of reading" - oh you caught us red handed, Derek. That's pretty much the entire point of book club, isn't it? We spend 45 minutes fighting over whether to read a thriller or a memoir because nobody actually wants to commit to the book part. The 1918 flu thing is just an excuse to keep the wine flowing and pretend we're being intellectual about history. Honestly, the book is just the price of admission for the real event: sitting around complaining about our lives and pretending we're cultured. So yeah, the beach might be a rough place for a pandemic retelling, but at least the wine will be cold.
