Gave that popular "dark academia" novel a real chance despite hating the hype
My book club picked The Secret History last month and I was ready to tear it apart as pretentious, but by page 120 I couldn't put it down and had to admit the tension was legit. Anyone else find a book you dismissed that turned out to be genuinely good?.

Oh, I had the exact same experience with The Secret History! I picked it up thinking it would be all fancy talk and no real story, but that slow burn feeling once they get into the woods... I was hooked. I remember specifically rolling my eyes at the "aesthetic" photos online, then staying up until 2 AM to finish the last hundred pages. I've also had this with a mystery novel called And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Saw it on every list and figured it was overrated, but the way she builds suspicion in that house was genuinely gripping. Sometimes the popular stuff really does earn its reputation, I guess.
