Hot take: I used to think our book club should only pick 'serious' fiction

For years, I pushed for dense literary novels in our Seattle group, arguing they were the only 'real' books. Then, after we read 'Project Hail Mary' last month, Sarah pointed out that my picks were making people skip meetings, and our attendance dropped from 12 to 5 regulars. I realized a good debate needs people to actually show up, so now I'm all for mixing in some fun sci-fi or mysteries to keep everyone engaged. What's a genre switch that saved your group's energy?

Oh man, this happens everywhere. My condo board tried to make all the meetings super formal and then wondered why nobody came. Switched to having them in the lobby with coffee and suddenly it's a party.

Right? It's like they forget people have to actually want to be there. The formal meeting with a strict agenda feels like being called to the principal's office. But give folks free coffee and a comfy chair and they'll chat about drainage issues for an hour. Why is that such a hard thing for boards to get?
