Hot take: my book club in Austin told me my discussion questions were too easy

Last month, Sarah from my group said my questions for 'Klara and the Sun' were just plot summary and didn't make us think. She was right, so now I spend an hour before each meeting writing questions that ask 'why' the author made a choice, not just 'what' happened. Anyone else get called out for leading a weak discussion and have tips for better questions?

My old roommate used to bring a list of 20 questions to our movie nights, like why a character wore a certain color shirt. It was overkill but kinda fun. @the_vera has the right idea with the weird detail thing.

Oof, been there. My first time leading, my big question was basically "So, did you like the book?" Crickets for a full minute. Now I try to find one weird detail and ask why it's even in there.
