Hot take: spending $35 on a used book at a library sale was a total bust
I picked up a copy of "The Overstory" at the Los Angeles Public Library's annual sale thinking I'd save cash, but the spine was so cracked it fell apart by page 80. Now I'm stuck with loose pages everywhere and no refund since it's a charity sale. Anyone else get burned by a bargain book that looked fine but wasn't?

Simon, you're spot on about that. I bought a "like new" copy of a cookbook at a charity sale, only to find half the pages stuck together with some sticky substance when I got it home. Lost a tenner and a weekend baking project.

How is it that stuff always looks perfect on the shelf but falls apart the second you actually need it? It's like that with everything lately - clothes that look sturdy but rip after one wash, tools that break the first time you use them.
