I just realized our book club has been picking books wrong for months, and it's killing our discussions.

Oh man, that's a tough spot. Our group almost fell apart over that. The key is you HAVE to pick books with actual stuff to talk about, not just a good plot. If everyone just likes it or hates it, the conversation dies in five minutes. You need something with messy characters or big ideas people can fight about. We started aiming for books that make people a little mad, and it saved us.

My friend's group read a book so boring they just ordered pizza instead.

What book finally got your group arguing? We tried a literary prize winner that was so up its own butt about metaphors, half of us wanted to burn it and the other half acted like we just didn't "get" art. Best meeting we ever had was yelling about whether the author was a genius or a pretentious hack. Now I refuse to pick anything that doesn't split the room right down the middle.
