My book club almost fell apart over a single sentence in chapter 4

Last month our group of 8 people spent two whole meetings arguing about one line from 'The House in the Cerulean Sea'. Was the main character's boss being controlling or just protective? I thought it was obvious but three others saw it totally different. We even had to table the vote on whether to finish the book or not. It was wild how something so small split us right down the middle. Has anyone else had a book club debate get that intense over just a few words?

Wait, does your group actually take formal votes on whether to finish a book? That's wild to me, we just kind of drift away from books people hate. One time my buddy's book club (I'm not in one, just hear stories) spent like 45 minutes arguing about whether the author's choice to describe a character's eyes as "the color of a stormy sea" was lazy writing or poetic genius. It got so heated the host's cat jumped off the couch and hid under the bed for the rest of the night. Weird how a tiny detail can make people that passionate, like your boss thing.

Cat hiding under the bed is pretty funny but honestly that 45 minute argument would probably convince me to finish just to see their reaction.
