My book club tackled a thriller and it bombed harder than I expected
We picked *The Silent Patient* for our July read and everyone showed up last Thursday either not finishing it or hating the twist. I thought we'd have a solid 90 minute debate but it fizzled out after 20 minutes with most of us just shrugging. Has anyone else had a pick that totally flopped and killed the discussion vibe?

The Silent Patient actually has a pretty straightforward twist if you pay close attention early on. That whole "unreliable narrator" angle gets telegraphed pretty hard by page 50 or so. Not saying it's a bad book but it's definitely overhyped for the kind of mystery fans who love a good rug pull.

About six chapters in I already had the narrator pegged as the guy who did it. My wife rolled her eyes when I told her because she was two chapters behind me and thought I was just being contrarian again. Took me back to the time I guessed the twist in Gone Girl by page 40 because I'm apparently really good at spotting when a character is lying about being a victim. Not sure if that makes me smart or just suspicious of everyone. Either way I felt like a real jerk when I was right and my wife had to hear about it for the rest of the week.
