My coworker swore our book club would fall apart if we picked a 600 page novel, and she was dead wrong
Back in January our little book club here in Boise had 9 members and we were stuck in a rut, all picking short reads under 250 pages so nobody would fall behind. My coworker Dana, who has been in clubs for like 15 years, pulled me aside after a meeting and said if we ever picked anything over 400 pages we would lose half the group within a month. She was so sure about it that she bet me 20 bucks we would be down to 4 people by the next meeting. So we picked a big dense one anyway, and here is the thing, we had the best turnout we have had all year, 11 people showed up including two new folks who heard about it from a friend. The debate that night went on for almost 2 hours and we never even made it past chapter 12 because everyone had something to say. Now Dana admits she was way off and she is the one pushing for a chunky pick again next month. So my ask is this, has anyone else dealt with a member who swears longer books kill a club, and did it actually happen for you or not?
