Overheard a book club member call a classic novel 'boring homework' and it made me mad

I was at the coffee shop in town and the group at the next table was talking about 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. One person said, 'It's just boring homework from high school, why are we reading it again?' That really got to me. It's not just a school book, it's about seeing the world through a kid's eyes when everything is unfair. Has your club ever had someone dismiss a classic like that?

They missed the whole point of the book.

Ugh, that happens all the time. I saw a whole movie review that spent ten minutes talking about the costumes in a war film. Sometimes people just fixate on the wrong thing completely.

Started telling my book club about how my cousin's kid had to read The Great Gatsby in school, and he told me it was literally just about a guy who throws parties for nobody. I laughed because okay, a kid missing the point is cute, but a grown adult dismissing To Kill a Mockingbird like that? That's just embarrassing. Like sure, maybe they didn't have a teacher who made them sit with the uncomfortable parts, but come on. It's not homework when you're old enough to actually get it.
