Overheard a debate about 'The Silent Patient' at the library and it clicked

Two people were arguing about whether the main character's silence was a plot hole or brilliant writing. One said, 'If she was really traumatized, she'd have spoken in therapy after 6 years.' That made me realize our book club fights are less about the book and more about our own views on psychology. Anyone else notice their group's debates say more about the members than the story?

Ever notice how book club arguments are just group therapy with cheaper snacks? Last month my friend insisted Gatsby could have just moved on from Daisy, which told me way more about her divorce than Fitzgerald's writing. We're all just using fictional characters as puppets to fight our own battles.

What if the book itself is a mirror? We don't just project onto the story, the author builds it to catch our reflection on purpose. That's why two smart people can read the same page and see totally different truths.
