Question about 'The Goldfinch' debate in my book club

Always thought it was a dull book. My club loved it. We had a huge argument. One friend talked about the painting's role. It clicked for me. Now I see the point.

What if the painting only matters because of how broken people see it?

Wait you thought the book was dull at first too lol. That painting is the whole point of the story, how did we miss it. Your friend must be a genius for spelling it out.

Man, I totally get this. I read 'Moby Dick' for a class and thought it was just about a whale. Then a buddy explained how the whale is like all the stuff we chase but never catch. It blew my mind. Same with your painting thing, where a broken character sees meaning in art. Sometimes you need that outside nudge to see what's really there.
