Shoutout to the guy at the used bookstore in Portland who said my book club picks were too safe
Last month I was at Powell's in Portland and this older guy behind the counter saw my stack of book club picks and said, "you're picking books to finish, not to argue about." I was kinda annoyed but he was right. Our club had been picking short, easy reads for like 3 months and meetings were getting boring, everyone just nodding. So I brought in a book that had a super unlikable main character and a totally open ending, and the meeting went on for 2 hours with people actually yelling at each other about it. Now I'm hooked on picking books that make people mad. Has anyone else had a club member or a stranger call out your book picks like that?
