Honestly, that guide was probably a solid move. Sometimes you need that outside expert breakdown to spot the deeper themes everyone else misses. That eighty bucks might have saved you from a surface-level chat about whales. A real messy debate beats a polite one any day.

Ever hire a guide for a museum tour? I did that once and it totally changed the game, just like @james661 said. The guide pointed out stuff in the paintings I would have walked right past, like hidden symbols and political jokes. It turned a quick walk into a two hour deep dive where we actually argued about what things meant.
