That guy who told me to skip the discussion questions was totally wrong

Last month at my local library's book club meetup, a dude named Mike said nobody reads the official discussion questions because they're too stiff. I took his advice and just winged it, asking random stuff like "what did you think about the main character's haircut?" The room went dead silent for like 10 seconds. Has anyone else had a bad experience ditching the prepared format for a book club debate?

Oh man, that is rough. I feel for you, I really do. I tried something similar once and it totally backfired too, people just stared at me like I had two heads. Some groups really need that structure to keep the conversation rolling, and winging it can make everyone uncomfortable. Better to test the waters with a small joke first before ditching the whole format.

Tried the same thing at a dinner party once and ended up talking about my cat's diet for twenty minutes straight.
