The Tuesday night group in Portland hit me with a hard truth about pacing

I used to run discussions with a timer, cramming 70 pages into an hour and a half. This one woman, Carol from the Pearl District, finally said, "You're treating a novel like a lawn you can mow fast." After that, I set a 40 page limit for each session and let people sit quiet for a bit. Has anyone else found that slowing down actually brings out better arguments, or is it just me?
