The weird glow-up in my book club after switching to paperback only

Our group was stuck in a rut reading on Kindles for like 2 years straight, everyone zoning out. Then we all picked up paper copies of a thriller for a change, and suddenly people were arguing about character motives at the coffee shop counter afterwards. Has anyone else seen a shift just from swapping the format?

72 pages into a mass market paperback of The Silence of the Lambs and I finally get it. I used to swear by my Kindle for the convenience but honestly this format makes me read slower and actually taste the words.

Did you try switching to mass market paperbacks or trade paperbacks? Because I've noticed the mass market ones actually FORCE people to slow down and pay attention since the print is smaller and the pages feel different. My old group had the same problem with e-readers - everyone just flying through chapters without really absorbing anything. Once we went full paperback, people started dog-earing pages and underlining sentences they liked. The physical act of holding something and turning pages seems to wake up your brain in a weird way. You might want to try intentionally picking books with stronger sensory details or smell descriptions too since paperbacks hold onto that bookstore smell better.
