Fought the roundabout at 15th and got a different result than the signs say

I've been driving that new 15th Ave roundabout near Main since it opened, and I always follow the yield signs. Last Tuesday I tried going with the flow like some locals do, ignoring the painted arrows, and nearly clipped a truck. The weird part is the truck driver honked and waved like I was the one messing up. So which is it, do we follow the painted lanes or the bumper-to-bumper habit everyone seems to use? Has anyone else gotten mixed signals there, or am I just reading the pavement wrong?

Those painted arrows are the actual law, not just a suggestion.
