I had the exact same thing happen at the Bothell Ace Hardware a couple months back. The guy saw my crispy brown spots and said I was drowning the roots, not helping them. He told me to water deep like once a week instead of a little bit every day and my lawn greened up in like two weeks. Nobody ever told me that less water actually makes the roots dig deeper to find it.

You mentioned the guy just saw your crispy brown spots and knew it was a watering problem. But did you actually dig down a few inches and feel the soil yourself before you changed your routine? Because in my experience, a lot of people assume they have the wrong problem based on the wrong symptom. Like, I've seen folks cut way back on water, but their dirt is still bone dry six inches down, and then they're shocked when the lawn stays crispy.
