Old Jerry from down the street told me to hold off pruning my apple tree until February

I went ahead and did it in October anyway and now half the branches have that black rot stuff. Should I just cut those off now or wait like he said?

Old Jerry knows his stuff, you gotta wait for the dormant season to prune those trees.

Used to think fall pruning was fine but watching a tree die taught me otherwise.

Fall pruning's actually fine for most trees if you do it right after the leaves drop, @oliver523. Dormant season is safer, but you're not killing anything by pruning a few weeks early.
