Put $80 into a 'sealed' battery for my lawn tractor that died after 3 mows

The guy at the small engine shop swore it was fresh stock, but I'm wondering if it sat on a shelf too long. Anyone else get burned by a battery that just wouldn't hold a charge from a local shop?
