Rant: That neighbor who told me to skip the foundation inspection on my shed

My neighbor Dave (lives on 182nd) said I didn't need to pay $300 for a soil test before pouring the slab for my new shed. Well, three months later and the whole thing's cracking because the ground shifted. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a local that cost them real money?

Honestly Dave probably meant well but that advice cost you way more than $300 in the long run. Tbh people always underestimate what happens under the ground. My buddy skipped the soil test on his patio project last year and now his whole slab is lifting up on one side because of some tree roots that were buried deep. He thought he was saving money but now he has to rip it out and start over which is going to cost him triple what the test would have been. Ngl that $300 fee feels like a rip off until you see what happens when you dont pay it.

and the thing nobody talks about is how those roots will keep growing even after you cut the tree down. i had a buddy who removed a huge oak, ground the stump, and thought he was done. two years later the roots under his garage slab had rotted out and created a void that caused the whole corner to sink like 4 inches. you spend all that money on the slab itself and the demo and the removal but you forget the ghost roots are still there doing their thing underground. soil tests catch that stuff before it becomes a $5000 problem.
