Took me 4 years to figure out I was putting mulch down wrong around my rhododendrons

I always just piled it up right against the trunk like a volcano, thought that was how you did it. Then my neighbor Lynn, who's been gardening here since the 90s, pointed out the bark was rotting the base of my biggest bush. Anyone else make this sort of simple landscaping mistake?

Nailed it too. Built a mulch mountain around my Japanese maple so tall it basically suffocated the poor thing.
