Took me 4 years to realize packing cubes are actually worth it

I always thought packing cubes were a gimmick for people with too much money. Then last month on a 10 day trip to Nashville I spent 20 minutes every morning digging through my bag for socks. My buddy handed me one of his extra cubes and suddenly I could grab a whole outfit in 5 seconds. Has anyone else had a random cheap travel item totally flip your opinion?

Hostel bunk reading lights drove me crazy until I bought a $5 headlamp

I spent a whole week in a hostel in Prague last summer trying to read before bed with those dim overhead bunk lights. They always shone right in someone's face or barely lit my book. I was super skeptical about headlamps for reading, thought they'd look dorky or be uncomfortable. But a guy in my dorm told me he uses a cheap hiking headlamp and it changed everything for him. Finally grabbed a $5 one at a local supermarket just to try it out. I angled it down toward my pages and it worked perfectly, no glare for anyone else in the room. Now I take it on every trip, it's way better than fighting with hostel lighting. Has anyone else found a weird cheap fix for travel annoyances?

Hostel bunk reading lights drove me crazy until I bought a $5 headlamp

I stayed at a Generator hostel in Madrid last week and those little bunk lights NEVER turn off completely, some flicker all night. Other people kept complaining about it in the room but nobody did anything. I just put on a $5 headlamp from Decathlon and pointed it at my book, total game changer. Now I can read without waking up the guy below me. Has anyone else dealt with terrible hostel lighting on a budget trip?

Remember when hostel kitchens actually had stuff to cook with?

I was in Prague back in 2014. Shared kitchen at a hostel had proper pots, real knives, even a strainer. Stayed at three hostels in Berlin last month. One had a single bent spatula and a pan with no handle. I think Airbnb and private rooms drained the budget from hostels. Kitchen gear got cut first. Anyone else notice this slide over the last decade?

Unpopular opinion: budget hostels are not always the cheapest option

Everyone raves about hostels saving money, but I got burned twice on them in Barcelona last spring. Unpopular opinion: Hostel loyalty programs are actually worth it if you do the math

I used to always just book the cheapest bunk on Hostelworld without thinking twice. But last year on a 3 week trip through Portugal I noticed I was spending like $12 a night at the same chain in Porto and Lisbon. Turned out signing up for their free membership gave me a free night after 10 stays and I was already at 8. The clerk tipped me off when I checked in and I saved like $30 on my last night which bought me a nice dinner. Has anyone else actually gotten anything good from hostel reward programs or is it just a gimmick?

Question about booking flights incognito vs using loyalty points - which saved me more?

I was booking a trip to Denver last month and my flight got cancelled last minute. I was at the airport, stranded, with a $200 budget to get home. I booked a new flight using my credit card points on Delta but later checked the same flight incognito on a budget airline and it was $50 cheaper in cash. Paid $15 for hostel laundry in Barcelona instead of hand-washing for a month

Back in March I stayed at this hostel in Barcelona where laundry was 15 euros per load, and I kept paying it out of laziness. Switched to hand-washing my socks and shirts in the sink with bar soap and saved like 60 euros over two weeks. Found a cheap way to eat in Paris by hitting up bakeries at closing time

I was in Paris last March and kept blowing my budget on sit-down dinners until I noticed bakeries near Montmartre would mark down croissants and quiche around 6 PM. Compared staying in a hostel dorm versus a capsule hotel in Tokyo last month...

The hostel dorm was $30 a night but I got zero sleep because of snoring, while the capsule hotel was $45 and I actually woke up rested, so the extra $15 was totally worth it for noise control.

Had the worst travel day of my life in Bangkok last month

It started when my overnight bus from Chiang Mai showed up two hours late, then broke down outside Ayutthaya at like 3am. I ended up stranded with no AC and a bunch of locals who didn't speak English, waiting for a replacement that never came. Finally got a shared taxi with three strangers, paid double what I planned, and rolled into Bangkok at noon instead of 7am. Has anyone else had a bus just completely ditch them like that?

Met a guy at a hostel in Lisbon last summer who refused to pay for any meals.
