35 Hours to Figure Out a County Bus Pass Rule

I landed in Lisbon last month and wasted 35 hours hopping on the wrong buses because no one tells you the Viva Viagem pass only works on certain lines. The tourist info desk gave me a map with zero details, I paid 1.80 euros three separate times for short rides that a day pass would've covered. Finally a local at Martim Moniz literally pointed to the small print on the back of the ticket machine screen. Why is this stuff never posted clearly, has anyone else burned cash on this exact trap?

Same thing happened to me in Porto, wasted a whole day on the wrong metro line before a ticket guy finally showed me the tiny map.
