A hostel owner in Lisbon showed me his secret for cheap local food
I was staying at a small place near Alfama last spring, and the owner, Miguel, saw me looking at a pricey menu. He pulled me aside and said, 'The best meals are where the workers eat. Go two streets behind the market before 1 PM.' I followed his tip and found a tiny canteen with a full plate of grilled fish, potatoes, and salad for 6 euros. It was the best food I had on that trip. Has anyone else found a local spot like this by asking the right person?

What if you just end up in a bad tourist trap instead?

My friend once paid twenty bucks for a tiny, awful pizza in Times Square.

Yeah, the "bad tourist trap" thing is so real. I once followed a bunch of online hype to this "must-see" local burger place that was just a total grease pit with weirdly sweet buns.
