Appreciation post: choosing a hostel over a hotel in Lisbon last minute

I was in Lisbon three weeks ago and had to pick between a cheap hotel for $80 a night or a hostel for $25 a night. I went with the hostel because I was trying to stretch my trip another day. Honestly, it was way better than I expected. The hostel had a free walking tour every morning, which saved me like $30 on a guide. Plus they had a shared kitchen where I cooked pasta for dinner, so I didn't eat out. The only downside was sharing a bathroom, but it was clean enough. Has anyone else had a good hostel experience that changed their mind about them?

I read where those hostel walking tours are usually run by locals who know all the hidden spots.
