Can we talk about how my $18 hostel bunk in Lisbon beat the $95 hotel room next door?

My buddy and I split up in Lisbon last October to test this out, him in a private hotel room near Rossio and me in a 6 bed dorm a few blocks away, and the hostel had free breakfast plus a kitchen while his spot charged $12 for a sad plate of eggs. I ended up spending maybe $40 total on food for the whole stretch because I could cook, and he burned through $200 eating out since his room had no fridge or stove. Does anyone else plan lodging around whether there's a kitchen, or am I overthinking it?
