Found a $4 train trick that cut my Lisbon day trips in half
I was burning money on those tourist passes in Portugal last month, like 20 euros a day for the same routes. Then a local at the hostel showed me the Viva Viagem card reloadable with single zone tickets, and I paid under 2 euros each way to Sintra and Cascais. It's just a dumb little chip card you top up at the station machine, no paperwork or app needed. Same trains, same seats, but my whole weekend cost less than one overpriced bus tour. Anyone else got a regional transit card hack that beats the obvious tourist option?

Sure, the Viva Viagem works great until you forget to top it up and get stuck at a station with a dead card and no cash on a Sunday. Then that “overpriced” tourist pass with its unlimited rides starts looking like the smarter, less stressful bet.
