Found a train trick that saved me 40 bucks in Italy last month
I was booking a trip from Rome to Florence and almost paid for the high-speed train until I noticed the regional trains take an hour longer but cost 12 euros instead of 45. The views were way better too since you go through smaller towns. Has anyone else found routes like this in other countries?

Seems like a good way to waste a whole day sitting on a slow train through the middle of nowhere. I'd rather pay the extra 33 bucks and get to Florence in time to actually do something with my afternoon instead of watching cows out the window. Plus those regional trains don't have wifi or power outlets half the time (at least in my experience) so you're stuck staring at the scenery while your phone dies.

Regional trains usually have power outlets in the newer carriages though, you just gotta grab a seat near the end of the car. I've done that Rome to Florence ride a few times and always bring a backup battery just in case, never had a problem. The slower ride is actually chill if you download a podcast or two before you leave, lets you see some cool hill towns you'd miss at 300kmh. Plus the 33 bucks you save can buy you a solid dinner in Florence near the Mercato Centrale.
