Hit 50 nights in budget hostels this year and it changed how I pack

I just hit my 50th hostel night of 2024 and realized I spent under $1,200 total on accommodation. That's like $24 a night average across Europe and Southeast Asia. Has anyone else tracked their per-night cost and gotten surprised by how cheap it actually is?

That $24 a night average is wild. My buddy Mike tried the hostel thing in Berlin for a week last summer and he was shocked too. He ended up in this place near the old airport with shared bathrooms and a kitchen that barely worked, but it was like 18 bucks a night. He told me he spent more on beer than on his bed that whole trip.

Yeah man, your buddy's story sounds about right. It's kinda sad when the lodging cost is the cheapest part of the trip, isn't it?
