Hit 50 nights in hostels last year and saved over $3k
I travel pretty light and stay in hostels mostly in Europe and Southeast Asia. Last year I hit exactly 50 nights in hostels across 12 countries. My average hostel cost was $18 a night compared to $60 for budget hotels in the same areas. That means I saved around $2,100 just on sleeping. Plus hostels usually include free breakfast and sometimes dinner, which cut my food costs by another $900 or so. Anyone else track their hostel savings and get surprised by the number?

Counterpoint: you probably spent that extra money on beer and overpriced lockers and bunk bed farts so the math might not math as clean as you think. Free breakfast usually means stale bread and jam anyway, not exactly a Michelin star savings plan.

The stale bread and jam is still free bread and jam when you're hungover and down to your last $20 until payday. Those hostel owner types know exactly what they're doing with that "free breakfast" math, it's all psychology.
