Hot take: A friend in Lisbon said my 'budget' trip was just me being cheap and missing the point.

They pointed out I spent $12 on a bus to a free viewpoint when a $3 pastry and a 20-minute walk from a different stop was the real local experience. Anyone else had a critique that actually improved how you travel?

Sounds like you paid extra for the lazy tax.

Oh man, that's so true. I got roasted for taking a pricey guided tour in Berlin to see street art. A local friend later showed me the exact same spots for free, just by knowing which neighborhoods to wander. Sometimes you pay for convenience and miss the whole point. That critique totally changed how I plan my days now.
