I thought the 'free city tour' in Prague was a total tourist trap until the guide spent three hours showing us hidden courtyards and ended it by buying us a beer.

Honestly, I was convinced it was a scam where they'd just pressure you for tips, but the guide, this guy named Tomas, was so passionate about the city's history and refused any money until the end, proving you can get an amazing experience for just a few bucks if you know where to look.

Used to think those free tours were just a way to guilt you into paying way too much at the end, but this changed my mind completely. @webb.jordan hit it exactly right about finding a local history student... Tomas was studying art history and he showed us this tiny, hidden beer garden behind an old church that wasn't in any guidebook. He pointed out a faded mural on a wall that had been painted over for decades, and then took us to a bakery where his grandmother used to work. Made me realize the whole tour is really about the guide, not the price.

Yeah, I read a blog post once that said the real trick is finding a guide who's a local history student. They're not just doing a job, they're sharing what they love, so you get those hidden spots.

That hidden courtyard part sounds amazing. What was the most surprising thing Tomas showed you that you'd never find in a guidebook? I've heard some of those tours can be hit or miss, so finding a guide who actually cares makes all the difference.
