Just realized I was overpaying for hotels by booking too early

For years I thought grabbing a hotel room 6 months in advance locked in the best deal. Then last March I booked a place in Denver for $180 a night, checked again a week before my trip, and the same room was $110. I felt like an idiot (and a little angry at myself honestly). The front desk clerk tipped me off when I checked in - he said most hotels drop prices 2-3 weeks out to fill empty rooms. Now I use a price tracker site and wait until 21 days before travel to book. Has anyone else learned this the hard way with a specific city?

lol I used to think early booking was smart too but now I wait and save like crazy.

Guess I'm old school then, still like locking in my spot early.
