Lost $85 on a layover bus pass that went absolutely nowhere

Last month I had a 9 hour layover in Denver and thought I was being smart by buying a day pass for the local bus system to see the city. I paid $85 for a bundle that supposedly covered the light rail and buses, but turns out most of the routes near the airport were under construction. I spent 2 hours waiting at a stop that had a sign saying it was temporary closed, then another hour on a bus that looped back to the terminal. Missed my chance to see the museums and ended up eating $14 airport pizza instead. Has anyone else gotten burned by these city transit passes during a layover, or do you all just stick to the airport lounges? I wish I had just checked the route map before handing over my card.

My coworker bought one in Chicago once and the train doors broke, so she sat there for an hour and missed her whole tour.
