My $30 hostel laundry gamble backfired in Lisbon last week

I tried washing my clothes in the sink with shampoo instead of paying for the hostel machine. The jeans came out looking fine but smelled like coconut for three days, and the shirt shrank a full size. Learned that hostel dryers cost less than replacing a favorite top, so now I just budget for it. Any tips for quick drying clothes without wrecking them when you're moving cities every few days?
