My brother said to always book a hostel bed for the first night, even if you think you can wing it.

I ignored him in Prague, got in at 11 PM, and everything was full or triple the price. Ended up paying $80 for a taxi to a sketchy motel on the outskirts. Anyone have a better plan for late arrivals in a new city?

What if you just booked a refundable hotel instead?

Yeah, that first night hostel bed is a lifesaver. Read a travel blog once that called it your "anchor," so you have a safe base to figure things out from. Even if you find something better later, having that spot locked in takes all the stress out of a late arrival.

Had a buddy who landed in Bangkok at like 2am after a 20 hour flight. He booked this random hostel near Khao San Road just to have somewhere to crash. Said he was dead tired but the second he dropped his bag and took a shower he felt like a new person. Ended up staying there for 4 nights cause he met some cool people in the common room and they all went exploring together.
