My trusty old water filter cost me a whole day in Marrakech

I took my ancient Katadyn filter on a trip to Marrakech last spring figuring it would work like always. Turns out the rubber gasket had dried out and cracked from sitting in my garage for two years. I spent a solid 8 hours hunting down a replacement gasket in the medina before giving up and buying a cheap local filter at a corner shop. The old one had been with me on like 10 trips so I was stubborn about fixing it. That whole day of walking around in the heat taught me to test gear a week before I leave home. Has anyone else had a piece of gear suddenly fail on them after years of reliable use?
