PSA: That "free" hostel breakfast cost me $40 in groceries

I booked a hostel in Lisbon last month because it advertised free breakfast. Turns out it was just toast and instant coffee, so I ended up buying eggs, fruit, and yogurt at the local market every morning. After 5 days I spent around $40 I could have saved by just booking a place with a real kitchen. Anyone else get burned by vague hostel amenity listings? How do you vet what "free breakfast" actually means before booking?
